Support Family Friendly Workplace Protections

Federal workplace policies have not kept up with the realities of working families.

Currently, several bills are propsed in Congress to better support family-friendly workplaces. The Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act (S.786/H.R. 1439), sponsored by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) proposes paid family and medical leave by creating a national insurance program. Funded through small employee and employer contributions, workers could take up to 12 weeks of leave for serious family or medical reasons while receiving a portion of their pay. The Healthy Families Act (S. 497/H.R. 932) would create a system for all workers to earn paid sick days base on the number of hours worked.

In both the House and Senate, these bills currently only have support from Democrats. It is time for representatives to work across the aisle and support these, and other, family-friendly workplace policies.
